The Good Food Road Map
Everyone in Aotearoa New Zealand should be able to access good food at all times.
That’s the mantra of the Good Food Road Map, a new strategic framework, created by The Southern Initiative and Healthy Families South Auckland, designed to move Aotearoa New Zealand towards food security and food sovereignty.
The Good Food Road Map supports the development of resilient food systems where individuals/whanau have access to food/drink which is affordable and appetising as well as sustainable, locally produced and culturally appropriate. Such a resilient local food system is demonstrated through these five action points:
Food Equity - supporting communities’ right to nourishing food and drink
Food Sovereignty - supporting sustainable and mana-enhancing community participation in local food systems
Food Culture and Traditions - supporting local food systems to reflect who we are as Aotearoa New Zealand
Food for Health and Wellbeing - supporting communities to take control of their food and drink intake with more options to support their health and wellbeing
Food Resilience - supporting all levels of the food system to be resilient with accessible food to everyone at all times.
Healthy Families South Auckland Lead Systems Innovator, Julio Bin, has been involved in the creation of the Good Food Road Map and says there are plenty of current initiatives that, as a whole, could create a powerful movement towards a resilient food system.
“But they need strategic support and guidance to leverage the work required to deliver positive long-term systemic change.”
“The Good Food Road Map is a plan to tackle food insecurity. It takes a realistic approach by harnessing international experience, local knowledge and leveraging existing resources from different stakeholders.
“It’s about working together to influence the necessary policy and behaviour changes to achieve food security and ensure that food sovereignty remains in the control of our communities in Aotearoa New Zealand.”
